Nos sentimos entendidos
La heterogeneidad de la primera mesa demuestra que el tema del congreso es verdaderamente bueno. Mis compañeros y yo hablamos de fútbol, anime, la dureza de la guerra e, incluso, de por qué nos aparecen vídeos que no nos interesan en la sección “para ti” de nuestras redes sociales. Aprendí muchísimo sobre cuestiones que, de no ser por el propio congreso, no me habría animado a investigar. Además, puedo asegurar que tanto yo como el resto de asistentes sentimos, en menos de tres horas, múltiples emociones distintas: nos sorprendimos por cómo se relacionan los distintas selecciones deportivas con espectáculos como el Mundial, nos sentimos comprendidos cuando descubrimos que todos habíamos visto una “frutinovela”; nos reímos cuando hablamos sobre gatos y, por último, se nos encogió el corazón al ser testigos de las injusticias que siguen ocurriendo en distintas partes del mundo.
También quisiera dar las gracias a las moderadoras del panel en el que participé, Lucía Caro y Lourdes Gallardo. La amabilidad y el apoyo de ambas me hicieron sentir muchísimo más tranquila y animada.

Separate, but not discordant, identities
I am in my office in Miami, 4,340 miles from Sevilla, smiling as I reflect on what a wonderful event this was. It was a watershed for me, in that I am new to academia. From that outsider’s perspective, I was quite impressed by how the voices, research results, and perspectives represented–so many identities–could be so disparate, yet not discordant, which is a tribute to the conference organizers’ vision and deft moderation of the panels. The personal identity I brought to the conference, that of a retired U.S. military officer, was one that I was very hesitant to showcase, especially considering current events. What I found was a lively environment of radical acceptance, and I was able to make connections with other experiences in a way that was both unexpected and inspiring. There were so many presentations I enjoyed, including Marta Sanchez Martin’s eye-opening conclusions about Truth Social, Tim Ouilette’s deeply moving Beyond the Standard Model, and my fellow panelist Aya Al-Zehhawi’s findings about intra-family communication patterns among immigrant communities. Bravo. Looking forward to next year’s conference, and I’m thrilled to have been a small part of the launch of this important forum.
